Inexpensive Dates with your Mate

Fun and creative ideas for time alone as a couple.

By Beverly Hernandez, About.com

Need ideas for creative and inexpensive dates? We all need to take time alone with our spouses to enrich and nurture our marriages. It is healthy for our children to see us spending time alone as a couple. It will help them to form healthy relationships of their own some day. Here are suggestions from fellow homeschoolers:

  • Go on a wine tour if there is a winemaker in the area - or if that's not your thing, then go take a walk on a hiking trail and bring a cheap bottle of wine home, amazing this time of year how little you care how cheap it is after a chilly walk!Gives you time to talk and relax, doesn't cost a thing! • Pack a picnic lunch/dinner and pick out a picnic table at a near by park. Enjoy your quiet time, talk, listen to birds, make plans. We are lucky we have a boat ramp 2 blocks from our house that hubby and I escape to now and then for some private conversation. It even has picnic tables to sit at.. LOL. So we get a walk and a quiet time together and we never tell the kids where we are disappearing to for an hour or so. LADYWREN2

  • For the creative idea for a date. Check your local maps and take a quiet drive to a near by ghost town. Have a nice picnic lunch and spend time just with each other. This is one of our favorite things to do. Rainy

  • My favorite cheap and inexpensive relaxation with my husband is our Jacuzzi for two in our big bathroom. The two of us LOVE to take a long hot bath together in the Jacuzzi tub. Great way to catch up on some togetherness! HSROCK

  • My husband gets paid every other Friday. We have found out that if we do not go out on that day we will never be able to find the money to go out. Our favorite date is to hire a babysitter (the most expensive part), get a bite to eat at fast food joint (to keep dinner cheep), and to spend the evening at the local large chain bookstore. The dinner goes quick, just about enough time to catch up on each others day. Both my husband and I are deprived of some alone time. The bookstore works great. We often choose our own books and sit in chairs across from each other, if we feel romantic we will share a chair. It is a great way to wind down. We are usually only out for 2-3 hours, it is not a lot but it really helped. XAN450

  • I think the best inexpensive date (although not very creative) with my husband are when the kids are in bed and we can watch a rented movie while we eat pizza and cuddle. SUNNI_DAE

  • One evening my husband and I planned to go out and have a romantic dinner so we took our children to my mother-in-law's house. We went out to a nice restaurant and while we were gone I had my sister to make a big heart shaped bouquet out of ballons. She decorated my bedroom with the bouquet and other balloons. To finish it off she had put grapes and a few other goodies in a picnic basket. My husband was pleasantly surprised and it didn't cost much either. RENITAD01

  • We live near a wildlife refuge. A good inexpensive date is to either make a picnic or grab some McDonalds, and drive out there just the two of us after dark. The sky is so much brighter and clearer out there it is beautiful. We just find a nice place to park and sit on the hood of the car and eat. Though we haven't done this for a while, it is a wonderful, romantic and QUIET date. MOMMTO3KIDS

  • This isn't the most creative thing to do, but my husband and I go to Taco Bell to eat, then we come home with a rented video and eat popcorn while we watch it. Bonnie
