Kids earning their spending money

Follow me on:

With these economic times, it's hard to keep up with the kid's expenses and spending money. My young neighbor raises all her own money to be in musical performances at Biola University, which is quite an expense. She has built up quite a business taking people's trash cans out to the street every week.

As young entrepreneurs, kids learn valuable life lessons. It's a good way to build strong work ethics to give them a strong foundation to take into their adult lives. Young Entrepreneurs will give you some ideas for your kids.

Do you already have an eager entrepreneur on your hands? Tell your story and give other homeschool students ideas for starting up their own little businesses. Eventually, we'll have a nice little library of ideas for kids to choose from.

A business ferrying trash cans to and from the street is a great idea! My husband forgets most of the time, and I’m often on duty with my dad. I’d be willing to pay a few bucks to get the trash out on a regular basis.

My children help out a neighbor who does not have any children by doing odd jobs and cleaning his house each week.
We have also had a couple of small business opportunities that our children have learned in, such as an EBay store.

It is important to teach our children real-life applications to finances and responsibility with their money and not just teach them from the textbooks!

This is kind of a gross idea but certainly a money maker – we have suggested that our son pick up dog doo in people’s yards – he has yet to take us up on that suggestion though :)

I’m currently writing a book on teenagers owning their own small businesses, so I’m full of ideas such as teaching piano, guitar, swimming or art lessons. Some teenagers set up websites and blogs. Some enjoying cooking for others and other teenagers get paid for taking pictures or videos and creating scrapbooks. One teenager I know creates and sells jewelry and another gives massages. My daughter tutors in Spanish and math.
There’s a lot of small jobs that teenagers (or younger kids) can do.

My teenage daughter raises, sells & shows rabbits. She very much enjoys it and the bunnies will pay for her college education!

I just did an article on this. I listed odd jobs, regular employment, craft businesses via Etsy, and participation in clinical trials. My daughter earned $20 at 5yo for wearing a pedometer for a week as part of a hospital research study.

My daughter asked a friend if she would give her permission to have a table for her to sell her baked good. She made business card and a poster. She has read many books on business ideas for kids and since she loves baking she decided to start her cupcake/cookies business.
