Petition to Request Depublishing of California Court Case In re Rachel L.

Saturday March 8, 2008
"One option to keep homeschooling free in California is to petition the Supreme Court of California to “depublish” the opinion. If the opinion is depublished, then it cannot be used by other California courts and this threat to homeschool freedom will be neutralized for other California homeschoolers." From HSLDA

You don't have to be a member of HSLDA or a California homeschooler to sign the petition.

(2) Terri Lyn says:

Just a quick note—My two youngest children were home educated. My daughter stayed at home while taking college courses at age 15 (we were in walking distance of the University). She is now in graduate school. I officially started my son’s education a few months before his eighth birthday (he was small for his age, has mild cerebral palsy on his left side, and has a couple of other medical problems). He has a great golf swing, and plays a good game—in fact, he is on the golf team at the high school. (The golf coach had begged him to attend the public school.)
My son finished is junior year during the last quarter in public school. He is a senior this year, has a gpa of 3.889, is 8th in his class out of 160+, on the academic team, the Model UN team, and will have 18 dual college credits at the end of this semester. During the Fall of 2006, the Robotic’s Team he was a part of won four awards and was chosen to go on to regionals.
During the time I home educated these two children, I took university classes-sometimes two, sometimes three or four. Some semesters I stayed home. In 2004, I received my BS in Education and Child Development, with a minor in History. I’m still somewhat involved with home education and will continue to support what I believe opens up a larger world to children. My children are very social people. They have participated in 4-H, dance, theatre, (my son played golf in tournaments in GA, SD, TN, since he was 10yo). We have been members of several home ed support groups over the years (their father’s work required him to transfer a few times). The smallest group we were part of was 38 families. The largest group we participated in had 102 very involved families. Field day was a blast!
My son says that public schools waste too much time. I substitute teach, and I agree. However, many do well in public school, many do well in private school, and many blossom in a home school setting. What is the best fit for your child? I’ve always supported the public schools where ever we were planted. Why? Because I want the best education for every child. We attended the ballgames, the school plays, the chili dinners, etc. Also,in all probability, my children will marry a public school graduate!
Remember, the US Supreme Court sanctioned ‘Home Schooling’.
Guess this was NOT a quick note!
