Homeschool Kids are "Socially Challenged"!

Friday April 27, 2007
I know, I know...you hate hearing about homeschoolers being unsocialized. I know it is the furthest thing from the truth and I, too, get tired of hearing about it over and over again. But I love what Jennie von Eggers sent to me after being questioned, "Aren't you worried about them not getting enough socialization?"

The socialization question seems to be the old-standby, passive aggressive attack, by those outside spectators of the homeschool movement. Read what Jennie von Eggers has to say about it in Homeschool Kids are "Socially Challenged"!

I’ve visited several of the schools in our area and trust me, there are more fools than wise-folk!

As a 6-year secondary teacher, I have had around 20 students enter into my classroom after various amounts of homeschooling – some for as long as kindergarten through 10th grade, some for just a few years. Without a doubt, they have all – and I mean ALL – been lacking in social skills. They are unable to read social cues, and non-verbal commuications. I’m never sure if they were like that to begin with, and that was a reason for the homeschooling in the first place or what. I imagine that a life-long homeschooler entering into “outside” adult life must have the same difficulties. As far as academics go, there have been fewer problems, although several of the boys would have benefitted from speech/language therapy and reading enrichment, which is par for the course in the bigger picture.
