Thursday Homeschool News Headlines
Friday October 28, 2005
I'm going to try a different approach to covering the homeschool news stories around the web. I'm going to post a daily roundup of the homeschool headlines on my front page. Let's see how it goes...here's the first.
- Why do people choose homeschooling? (Penn State Live) This article by Melissa Beattie-Moss is basically a summary of reasons parents choose to homeschool, as well as a mention of diverse curriculum and methods. The final paragrah was, well, I don't have words for it...
"While the once-illegal homeschooling trend is indisputably on the rise, Marshall -- while applauding those families who teach their children well -- remains concerned that there may be a societal price paid for this movement. 'For these families to dismiss opportunities which can perhaps best be provided through the educational agency of school is a tragic loss which affects everyone who cares about civic America.'"
- House and school (The Hutchinson News) It seems that "the most popular reason involves religious beliefs" is the theme for the news today. I didn't homeschool for religious reasons, but I think I was in the minority at the time. It's a nice article, but I can't imagine homeschooling for seven to eight hours a day.
- Colleges Welcome Texas Homeschoolers (Heartland Institute) With the UC's recruiting homeschoolers in California and Texas Universities coming around, things are looking up for homeschool graduates. It was interesting to read the history of the battle to stop colleges from discrimination against homeschooled students in Texas.
